Neymar’s brain on auto-pilot

Brazilian superstar Neymar’s brain activity while dancing past opponents is less than 10 per cent the level of amateur players, suggesting he plays as if on auto-pilot, according to Japanese neurologists.

Results of brain scans conducted on Neymar indicate minimal cerebral function when he rotates his ankle and point to the Barcelona striker’s wizardry being uncannily natural.

"From MRI images, we discovered Neymar’s brain activity to be less than 10 per cent of an amateur player," researcher Eiichi Naito said on Friday.

"It is possible genetics is a factor, aided by the type of training he does."

The findings were published in the Swiss journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience following a series of motor skills tests carried out on the 22-year-old Neymar and several other athletes in Barcelona in February.

About the pressure for being the captain: It’s something I think about all the time. In fact, it’s something I’ve thought about since Mano selected his very first squad, for that friendly against USA. Time passes quickly and the pressure doesn’t stop increasing. It’s totally normal to get nervous, to have butterflies in your stomach, but you relax once the game kicks off. The fear of losing is always there, but you mustn’t let that fear dull your desire to win. In my particular case, because I’m the captain, the pressure is greater but fortunately it’s something I’m able to cope with well. Wearing the armband makes me remember everything I’ve been through to get here and, for that reason, you can be sure that I’m going to do my best to do it proud, so that everyone can look to me as an example to follow.

Anonymous: "What is 50 shades of grey about? And what's so bad about it?"

aconissa:

50 Shades of Grey was originally fanfiction based on the Twilight series, which was then published as a novel (along with 2 subsequent books). It sold over 100 million copies around the world and topped best-seller lists everywhere. It’s about to be adapted into a film, set to come out early next year.

It follows a college student named Ana Steele, who enters a relationship with a man named Christian Grey and is then introduced to a bastardised and abusive parody of BDSM culture.

While the book is paraded as erotica, the relationship between Ana and Christian is far from healthy. The core mantra of the BDSM community is “safe, sane and consensual”, and 50 Shades is anything but. None of the rules of BDSM practices (which are put in place to protect those involved) are actually upheld. Christian is controlling, manipulative, abusive, takes complete advantage of Ana, ignores safe-words, ignores consent, keeps her uneducated about the sexual practices they’re taking part in, and a multitude of other terrible things. Their relationship is completely sickening and unhealthy.

Basically, “the book is a glaring glamorisation of violence against women,” as Amy Bonomi so perfectly put it.

It’s terrible enough that a book like this has been absorbed by people worldwide. Now, we have a film that is expected to be a huge box-office success, and will likely convince countless more young women that it’s okay not to have any autonomy in a relationship, that a man is allowed to control them entirely. It will also show many young men that women are theirs to play with and dominate, thus contributing to antiquated patriarchal values and rape culture.

I will never forget what it is like to look out at 40,000 of you, who seem to know the words to every single song we’ve played tonight. Would you sing for me now as L O U D L Y as you possibly know how?
